Microsoft has released the final build of Windows 8 to its hardware partners, following two years of development and two preview releases.
‘OEM partners are now armed with final code, and can begin building new Windows 8 PCs and devices to introduce this fall, starting Friday, October 26, at General Availability,’ said Microsoft in its Windows 8 RTM press statement.
Beating Apple to the post by being the first to introduce a completely unified platform, Microsoft’s Windows 8 is the company’s most audacious move in years.
With Microsoft’s Windows core developers will be able to create content that can be disseminated across Windows 8-powered tablets, PCs and smartphones with relative ease. No other platform currently affords developers this ability.
Even Apple, often lauded as tech’s biggest innovator, is a good couple of years behind offering this level of access to developers, despite the advancements it implemented inside Mountain Lion, which brings a plethora of iOS features – Reminders, Notifications, and Messaging – to OS X.
Tablets running Windows 8, as well as its ARM-based version, Windows RT – are expected to hit market in Q4 2012 from a variety of manufacturers.
Microsoft detailed exactly what’s going to happen between now and the commercial release of Windows 8 inside its press statement. Here is the breakdown:
August 15:
Developers will be able to download the final version of Windows 8 via MSDN subscriptions.
IT professionals testing Windows 8 in organizations will be able to access the final version of Windows 8 through TechNet subscriptions.
August 16:
Customers with existing Microsoft Software Assurance for Windows will be able to download Windows 8 Enterprise edition through the Volume License Service Center (VLSC), allowing the opportunity to test, pilot and begin adopting Windows 8 Enterprise within their organizations.

August 20:
Microsoft Action Pack Providers (MAPS) will receive access to Windows 8.
September 1:
Volume License customers without Software Assurance will be able to purchase Windows 8 through Microsoft Volume License Resellers.
October 26:Windows 8 will be available to consumers either by upgrading or on a new PC. Eligible Windows 7 PCs purchased now qualify for an upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $14.99 (U.S.) through the Windows Upgrade Offer.
Expect to see tablets running Windows RT from Samsung, Nokia, Asus and Lenovo getting official very soon. We are officially excited.
